Give the public access to more raw data

NASA already collects more data than it can interpret. Make more databases widely available to the public, and encourage app builders, programmers and students to build and share apps that make that data understandable. Centralize current data crowdsourcing projects. Develop, or encourage the development of, an open-source SDK for NASA data.

    LIVE FEED

LIVE FEED 24/7 from ISS! have selectable camera views, inside, outside, some pointed Earthward and some out into space. It would be neet to click on and catch a spacewalk or docking live. run audio too.

    Countdown clock

Often when I want to be sure not to miss an event on NASA TV I wish there was a clock on the website showing either current EST or a countdown to event. I'm on west coast and sometimes I get the time difference wrong.

    NASA University

Put together a series of 1-5 minute video primers on basic astronomy, earth and climate science, current NASA missions, areas of controversy, profiles of NASA leaders, etc. Make them available on the front page of nasa.gov or at another central location (suggestion: u.nasa.gov). Update them regularly as new data are received or different events draw the public's attention.

    space events observation

a good Idea may be tracking notable events in our solar system (comets , planets closing earth . etc) and other events that can be seen with naked eye or basic equipment

this can be interesting too .. as well as space techonologies and discoveries

    More Hard Science

For each story posted on the Nasa website provide a link for the more technical people to read. From the general science stories I am often left wondering, "but how?" and "But why?"

    Defragment NASA's online presence

At the moment, there are over 60 public subdomains associated with nasa.gov (see list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Official_NASA_Websites). Are they all necessary? How would a new user know where to start? How do these pages link to each other and share information? Do subdomains of different classes and categories sort together? Note that most of these subdomains do not have the same branding, page navigation ...more »

    History

Having had the privilege to see Space Shuttle's go up and Mars rovers and what not, I feel that the history section of the site needs a major overhaul. I am sure there is a lot of historical content that can be showcased in the site. I have seen anniversary articles come up every now and then, But I do not see a good way to walk down the memory lane.

    Improve navigation and search

It can be very difficult to find projects through navigation and search generally returns press releases and other news first instead of project pages.

I complained about this for Robonaut here: https://plus.google.com/113877329140724398251/posts/RhCVmobaqpR

    HTML5 standards

There are many interactive features on nasa.gov that need plugins (SilverLight, Flash etc). I would recommend to use open HTML5 standars like canvas, WebGL, CSS3 transforms, embedded SVG, WebM videos instead, which run natively in the browser. I beleive that many people don't feel like to use these great features because of the inconvenience of installing cumbersome plugins.

Focus on live and interactive events

The landing of the Curiosity rover, the successful launch of private rockets to the International Space Station and Felix Baumgartner's historic jump from the edge of space all drew attention in 2012. People are inspired by feats of intellectual and physical achievement, and they need to know what NASA is doing (and could do) with their tax dollars. Make it easier for people to view and interact with scientists and astronauts ...more »

    Fix your www. resolution

Your current website doesn't work in certain browsers if you don't type the "www" prefix.

    Ex. in Chrome:

Oops! Google Chrome could not find nasa.gov

    Did you mean: www.nasa.gov

This is something that can be resolved immediately.

    Events Calendar

The Events calendar on the home page serves the purpose but there are many weeks/ months where the whole calendar is empty, for instance November there are no events, but i am sure there are some events somewhere in the world, eclipse, other stuff etc. Maybe those should also be included.

    Time

From this side of the Atlantic (UK) the use of the same timezones with different names (ET, EST) or other timezones altogether can lead only to confusion. It would be better if Times were always localised for the visitor. Computers can do this!!!

We need to get the public involved

Have somewhere on the site telling civilians what they can do to get involved, or what they should get for an education if they want to have careers with space exploration. We need to get people thinking about how to expand the frontiers of humanity.

    Content for kids

Having 3 kids myself, I am in constant search for ideas to inculcate an interest in science for my kids. I agree that there is a separate section for the kids but you have to look for it since it is a single link in the top of the page. While the content there is good, I was hoping for more engagement for the next generation of explorers in anytown USA. I would recommend when content is produced in general there should ...more »

    Mission icons

There could be icons of the current missions (MSL, Cassini, Hubble, Kepler, etc.) Like now "Sation and Shuttle, Universe, Technology, etc.), but now the icons would be coloured, and the spacecraft's current pisition in the solar system, or when it's an orbiter, it would show the planet, the orbit of the spacecraft, and the current pisition of it. Or if it is on a planet (like MSL) it'd show the position on the planet. ...more »

Include list of Congress members who most influence NASA budget

It would be nice to know which members of congress do and do not support more funding of NASA. Registered voters could be more influential if we only knew which members of Congress are more likely to listen.

More organized and prominent mission progress reports

I want to be able easily get mission updates that are thorough and updated consistently. For example, after Curiosity landed I went looking around to see if there was some sort of blog that would provide daily updates on what the rover was doing. I wasn't able to find a satisfactory option on NASA's site. A great example of what I would expect would be on http://www.spaceflight101.com/msl-mission-updates-4.html. NASA ...more »

Framework for citizens to build applications on

I would recommend that NASA provide frameworks by way of API, Webservices and other means that can be used by developers across the globe to build cool application. I am aware that there is a tracker in one of the sites for the space station. Maybe the data that is used to create this application can be provided and developers can create kick-ass mashups with that data. I believe that would foster NASA's outreach even ...more »
