NASA University

Put together a series of 1-5 minute video primers on basic astronomy, earth and climate science, current NASA missions, areas of controversy, profiles of NASA leaders, etc. Make them available on the front page of nasa.gov or at another central location (suggestion: u.nasa.gov). Update them regularly as new data are received or different events draw the public's attention.

  1. I like this idea and I might consider something along the lines of EdX as well. I would love to see NASA and EdX collaborate on a space related series of courses. Even having these two social networks communicate more with one another would be great. (I'm sure the organizations do already considering many careers of the aerospace instructors and guest speakers) It would be great for NASA to branch out more into the academic realm.

  4. Nasa should run as a unviersity if possible with distance course on astronomy and related ones. For the time being just conduct the classes on astronomy, planetary science and related ones...it will be really a great thing.

  5. Team up with Khan Academy. Potentially list how physics are used in modern space travel.

  6. I would like to propose an online university on behalf of NASA dealing with astrophysics, astronomy, space technology, earth science. It should issue a certificate after the completion of course.

I think it would be a good idea to help more people know and know how to use the rocket equations. then people could understand the benefit of things like nuclear thermal propulsion by looking at the undeniable numbers.

    6. Reluctantly, as a long-time worker at a NASA research center, I disagree.

I've worked with many knowledgeable engineers and scientists who knew their field very well. But none of them had professional teaching experience. In my experience, their professional presentations were targeted at common, casual public questions, or to conferences. Neither of these really has to do with explaining the entire foundations of a subject to a typical student.

Moreover, having been a manager on a project that had a significant "public face", I felt that audience's attention span was quite limited. Even on details that were non-technical, after a short while most people's attention begins to fade. It's not a classroom situation where the audience needs to pass any test, so they often aren't paying close attention, never taking notes, and tire when there are more than a couple intellectual challenges.

      1. Dear John

Thanks for sharing your experience. But I have something to say. The basic point of astronomy or cosmos is the BIG BANG. And it is stated that all the visible and invisible universe was once concentrated in a singularity with infinite density and zero volume. But you know somebody may differ with the notion. The person who will differ may not be a scientist in academic or terminological sense. That person may have some landmark thought, which (who can say?)can bring new dimension of research in this field. He or she may not have the scope to get a chance in a high level university for academic degrees. I would like to request NASA to form an ONLINE UNIVERSITIES with courses and credits so that these persons may sharpen their knowledge for the advancement of their own research. This university will help them to get the required datas and explanation when needed for their researches. It is important to find out the hidden talent instead of making A SCIENTIST a MORE SCIENTIST. I think this proposal is not so odd. Many peoples will support this idea.

  14. I am a homechooler with a 10 yr old daughter who wants to work for NASA in engineering and design when she grows up. A source like this would be fantastic for her. She already reads as much as she can and utilizes resources from the NASA Library and educational services, but there is never enough to satisfy her curiosoity.

  15. A NASA Academy via iTunes, Khan Academy or NASA direct could work great for homeschoolers. Too bad congress recently cut funding for education to the NSF. This will negatively impact NASA, NOAA, USGS, etc.

  16. There are many educators within each NASA center and often connected to online opportunities for professional development for educators. I agree that with a little coordination by the agency and university providers, coursework could be provided directed by certified educators and mission content specialists.
